Supporters of Brazil’s former president, right-wing politician Jair Bolsonaro, have stormed Congress in the capital, Brasilia.
The presidential palace and the building that houses the country’s highest court are said to have been attacked.
According to information, opponents of the current president must have broken into the congress building itself. Many have besieged the roof of the modern building after breaking police cordons.
Dressed in yellow and green, the colors of the Brazilian flag, protesters against new president Luís Inácio Lula da Silva had gathered outside barricades at the Congress building in the modern capital.
No meetings
No meetings are taking place in the congress building. President Lula da Silva was also not in the official presidential palace Planalto.
Also in the area outside the presidential palace, there are skirmishes with protesters where police are trying to disperse crowds with tear gas
Reports from inside the congress building are sporadic as no reporters are yet on site.
Broke through the security fence
Angry regime critics broke through the security fence guarded by federal military police. In hordes they climbed onto the flat roof of the Congress.
The first images, published by the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, recall the storming of the Capitol in Washington DC two years ago, when supporters of former US President Donald Trump wanted to show their hatred for the democratic institution.
Information on social media claims that protesters also managed to enter the building.
The storming past barriers takes place just over a week after Lula da Silva was sworn in as president. The then outgoing president Bolsonaro refused to participate in the ceremony, and since then supporters of Bolsonaro have, among other things, demonstrated outside the military headquarters in Brasilia.
