In Brazil, President-elect Lula is fulfilling one of his campaign promises: the “Bolsa Família” social program will be extended for the next four years. It’s on the front page of Carta Capital : the poorest Brazilians will therefore continue to receive the allowance of 600 reais, or just over 100 euros per month. The Senate validated the bill on Monday, November 28.
It is, in fact, a proposal for a constitutional revision which plans to sanctuarize 198 billion reais per year, necessary to guarantee the payment of the allowance. This amount will not be part of the budget whose expenditure is capped. According to the newspaper zero hours, Lula had to get personally involved in the negotiations with the parliamentarians of the two chambers who still have to fine-tune the text. An agreement is expected before the end of the year, that is to say before the entry into office of the new government, writes zero hours.
Bolsonarists against the World Cup
One of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro’s sons, Eduardo, was filmed in Qatar celebrating Seleção Luindi’s Nov. 28 victory over Switzerland, which drew heavy criticism from some Bolsonarians. The latter are still camping in front of the military barracks and are loudly calling for a coup d’etat. They are convinced that it was not Lula who won the presidential election, but Jair Bolsonaro. And, according to Folha de Sao Paulothey believe that as long as the coup does not take place, as long as the “real Brazil has not been restored”it is worth ignoring the World Cup in Qatar and the performance of the Brazilian team.
On an Instagram page of a far-right pro Bolsonaro group, published by the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulowe can also read: “Incredible: they are there in Qatar taking part in this show of bread and games while the people gathered in front of the barracks demand that things change. What a bad example! »
The new political deal in Florida, an opportunity for foreign policy?
The fact that the state of Florida is definitely lost to the Democrats in 2024 is good news for American foreign policy. At least that’s what the washington post. Explanation: until now, writes the newspaper, Florida was a “swing state” (a state that leaned sometimes towards the Republicans, sometimes towards the Democrats). Therefore, in order to appeal to these volatile voters, President Joe Biden was pursuing a conservative approach, that of his predecessor Donald Trump, towards Cuba and Venezuela.
But since now there is no hope for the Democrats to recover this state in 2024, the head of the White House could adopt a more pragmatic strategy with regard to these two states, writes the washington post. And besides, it is already doing so, adds the newspaper: Saturday, November 26, the Biden administration announced an easing of sanctions against Caracas, by authorizing the oil giant Chevron to partially resume its hydrocarbon extractions in Venezuela. This is the path that must be followed, according to the washington postbecause it turned out that all the pressure of the American government during the last years was not enough to overthrow the regime of Nicolas Maduro.
