After the meatballs and macaroni decision in Bollnäs, the next municipality can now catch on to the food trend.
In Östersund, there is now a proposal to serve sausages and macaroni to school students – every day, reports P4 Jamtland.
– It’s nice that the children have alternatives, says dietitian Andrea Mikkelsen, specialized in children’s health care.
Earlier last fall, it was clear that two schools in Bollnäs municipality started serving meatballs and macaroni every day for the rest of the semester. The food must be a supplement to the regular school food that is served.
Now another municipality can follow suit. In Östersund, there is a proposal that sausages and macaroni should supplement the regular school menu, reports P4 Jamtland.
– In general, I think it’s nice that the children have alternatives, says dietician Andrea Mikkelsen, specialized in children’s health care.
The most important thing is that children eat
The fact that the option exists, she sees, is a good supplement for children who don’t like to eat at all. Serving sausages and macaroni, she sees, is better than other schools that serve filet and cereals as an alternative to the school meal.
– The most important thing is that they get lunch and eat it. Then that there is variety and options to choose from. And there is, she says.
For many children with picky eaters who only eat a number of foods, this suggestion can be a good solution.
– For children who have challenges, it can create security and it’s good that they eat something anyway, she says.
“You have to solve the school day somehow”
Andrea Mikkelsen believes that there are many aspects to review on the subject, but says that it would be sad if it were the case that the children only eat this every day, as it is difficult to know what the children are getting at home after school.
– Of course you get calories and it contains carbohydrates, protein and fat. But it’s sad if that’s what the children choose to eat every day and if they don’t learn to eat anything else, she says.
But she understands that children need to eat in order for the school day to flow smoothly and produce results.
– You have to solve the school day somehow, she says.
