Bolivias ex President Anez goes on hunger strike in prison

It has been reported that Jeanine Anez, who assumed the temporary presidency in Bolivia in November 2019 after then-President Evo Morales resigned as a result of pressure from the army, started a hunger strike in the prison where she was detained on the charge of coup.

In the letter she read on behalf of her mother Anez, Carolina Ribera said, “I am making one of the hardest decisions of my life, I am on a hunger strike. I am tired of observing an unfair and unlawful country.” Anez took her hunger strike decision one day before the start of the lawsuit filed against her.

HE ALSO TRIED TO SUICIDE

Anez was arrested in March last year on suspicion of terrorism, sedition and coup d’etat, and attempted suicide in the prison where he was detained. Anez’s lawyer, Norka Cuellar, stated that Anez had 3 cuts on his left wrist and the cuts were stitched up.
In the investigation launched against Anez, it was stated that he illegally declared himself President of Bolivia, violating the country’s constitution and laws.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After the general elections in Bolivia on October 20, 2019, which the then President Evo Morales won, the opposition supporters took to the streets for alleged fraud. As the protests intensified with each passing day, the Bolivian army threatened Morales with a coup. Morales, who could not stand the pressure and submitted his resignation on November 10, went first to Mexico and then to Argentina as a political refugee. Anez temporarily replaced Morales, who resigned, and it was announced that 29 people lost their lives in the protests that started and the violence that followed. In the general elections held on October 18, 2020, Morales’ candidate, Luis Arce Catacora, emerged victorious.

Morales returned to his country within the first year of his departure, after Catacora, which he supported, won the election. (UAV)
