It is the first time that the Dutch flag is carried by two athletes during the closing ceremony. “Femke has achieved a unique feat here in Paris”, explains chef de mission Pieter van den Hoogenband. “Her final sprint during the 4×400 meters will forever be etched in the Dutch collective memory. She attacked with courage in the 400 meter hurdles and she showed unprecedented resilience in the women’s 4×400 meter relay. Resulting in an incredible result: gold, silver and bronze. I think that as TeamNL we could not wish for better athletes to carry the flag on our behalf during the closing ceremony.”
