Bluetongue virus is spreading rapidly and has already infected more

Bluetongue occurs in sheep and other ruminants such as goats and cattle. Deer and camelids can also get it. The disease is named after one of the symptoms, blue tongue, that infected animals can develop. The virus is spread by small biting flies, so-called midges. They do not transmit the disease to humans, but they do transmit it to ruminants such as sheep, goats and cows. Sick animals develop infections in the mouth, among other things.
