Blue Protocol: Release of the MMORPG hope for 2023 is postponed

The anime MMORPPG Blue Protocol was the hope and the highlight of 2023 for many. Now developer Bandai Namco announces in a stream that the game has to be postponed, at least in the west.

What was announced in the stream? On June 23rd, Blue Protocol developers Bandai Namco held their seventh dev stream. There was some new information about the game, but western fans in particular should not like it.

At first there was great joy, because the devs proudly announced that Blue Protocol will be released in Japan on June 14, 2023, in just under 3 weeks. But then came the devastating news for Western players.

With us, Blue Protocol will no longer appear this year, but only in 2024. An exact date is not yet known. While the same slide in the stream announced closed beta testing for the West later this year, that’s little consolation.

Why is the release being postponed in the west? Amazon or Bandai Namco do not give exact reasons for the long delay in the western release. On their website they write:

Our planned release window is shifting to 2024 while we work to release Blue Protocol in the west for PC, Xbox X|S and PlayStation 5. We’re working flat out to localize the compelling stories and build the infrastructure needed for multiplayer adventures and massive online raids against huge monsters to give our players the best possible experience at launch.

The localization may therefore take longer than initially assumed. The console release mentioned so bluntly in this statement could also be a reason for the postponement, but at the end of the day we’re only guessing here.

Here’s how you can try Blue Protocol later this year

How do you get into the beta? As mentioned at the beginning, there should still be closed beta tests for the MMORPG in 2023. You can already register for these and get a taste of the world of Blue Protocol this year.

To do this, simply go to playblueprotocol.com and select that you want to enroll in the beta. By the way, you need an Amazon account for this to work.

There is no date for the beta yet. After you have successfully registered, however, you will receive a message that you will be notified by email as soon as a date has been set.

Also, the stream only mentioned a PC beta, so it’s unlikely you’ll be able to play on Xbox or PlayStation. However, nowhere on Amazon’s official website is it described that the beta should only take place on PC. We must be surprised.

Can you play in Japan via VPN? Probably not. Technically, this could work, but you could already see in the network test that Bandai Namco swings the ban hammer without mercy.

So it can be assumed that you won’t be able to simply gamble in Japan even after the official release.

Community is annoyed and comes up with wild theories: “Amazon just doesn’t want any competition for Throne and Liberty”

How are the fans reacting? In the subreddit, the announcement about the postponement was really bad, to say the least. Among the 224 comments on the post, which, by the way, he got in just 20 hours, there are only a few positive comments.

This small handful of fans will be happy that there will already be a well-established wiki and lots of information about the game when we publish it. But that’s the minority. A majority of the fans are upset that the game will be postponed for at least 6 months, rather more.

Wild theories are also quickly emerging among fans, as many cannot imagine that localization is the reason for the shift. Some speculate that Amazon is aiming for a simultaneous release for PC and console.

Others believe that marketing is behind it and they simply don’t want to bring Blue Protocol to the Western market in the same timeframe as Throne and Liberty. The mood among the fans is very depressed, no matter what theory they believe.

What people say: At this point we would like to give you some of the comments. They’re all from the thread covering the Blue Protocol move:

  • ds2isthebestone writes: “How do you justify a delay of more than 6 months for a game that is already finished in June? Really Amazon, huh?”
  • LinkofHyrule says: “I think they want a simultaneous release of the consoles with the PC. That means that they then have two more platforms that cause problems.”
  • Kuhaku-Boss writes: “I bet they just don’t want it to come out at the same time as Throne and Liberty. You’ve already postponed Lost Ark because of New World. I’d just rather have another publisher.”
  • JimmyBacon says, “That really killed all my hype. Waiting more than 6 months while others can already play the game is annoying.”
  • What do you think? Were you looking forward to Blue Protocol? How do you like the shift? Is it bearable, or is your hype gone too? Write it to us in the comments here at MeinMMO.
