In the series Blue Bloods – Crime Scene New York, actor Tom Selleck was apparently involved behind the scenes right from the start. So he committed himself to to give the character of a fellow actress a new name. His colleague Abigail Hawk agreed – and is very grateful for it today.
How Detective Baker got her first name
As Hello magazine recently reported, there’s a longer story behind the naming of Abigail Hawk’s character, Detective Abigail Baker. Starting with the fact that the investigator initially didn’t seem to have a first name.
Anyone who pays attention will notice that Abigail Baker is influenced by other characters in the first episodes of the first season of Blue Bloods is only addressed as a detectivebut never with a first name.
This should originally have been called Melissa. For personal reasons, Abigail Hawk’s actor colleague, known in the series as family man Frank Reagan, advocated changing the name. Abigail Hawk remembers:
“He said, ‘We will keep Abigail here as a special assistant and first aid to the commissioner. But I don’t like Melissa, it’s such a common name. We can find something better.”
As she continues to report, the name change meant her character a positive turnaround for Abigail Hawk personally:
“The more Tom sat with Melissa, the more he said, ‘I don’t want to call you anything other than Abigail, I think that fits the role. It was the first time in my life that I looked at my name in a truly positive way. I hated him growing up.”
From episode five or six of the first Blue Bloods season onwards, that was it Detective Abigail Baker was given her full name. The crime series has now come to an end after 14 seasons. However, spin-offs are not ruled out.
Although the actress hasn’t finished Blue Bloods yet, she is basically open to the idea of a sequel:
“We felt like there was so much more we could tell and tell and create, but I think there are certain characters who could have quite amazing and interesting lives beyond the world of the Reagans, and I think Abigail Baker is one of them.”
It remains to be seen which sequels may follow in the future and whether Abigail Hawk’s character will play a larger role in them.
