In Blue Bloods – Crime Scene New York, Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg play father and son in a police family in their roles as Frank and Danny Reagan. This line-up was initially problematic for Wahlberg, after seeing his co-star on set for the first time. The casting was done straight away for him, but then he found a kind of lifeline.
Donnie Wahlberg initially thought the Blue Bloods line-up was absurd
According to Looper, the actor spoke as a guest on the Brotherly Love podcast about the moment he first saw Selleck on the Blue Bloods set. In addition to the difference in size, he immediately noticed other details that made him suspicious:
The differences didn’t end there either. I thought, ‘Oh my God, he has so much hair. His eyebrows are so bushy.’ I didn’t care about the mustache. I wondered: ‘How can I be this guy’s son?’ …They’re going to fire me tomorrow.
The casting of Len Cariou as the grandfather of Wahlberg’s character Danny was the justification for the star to embody the role believably. Being shorter than him and having the same hairline, he would be able to justify his genetics by being part of the family.
