According to anonymous sources who spoke to the news agency, the parties are close to an agreement that would allow Russian forces to remain at the Tartus naval base and the Khmeimim airbase.
The Tartus naval base is Russia’s only base in the Mediterranean, while the Khmeimim air base supports Russian operations in Africa.
Bloomberg cites its Russian source, according to which the parties have reached an “informal understanding” on the matter. However, the source points out that the situation may still change due to the unstable situation in Syria.
Also Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mikhail Bogadov says on Thursday that the country aims to maintain its military base in Syria, despite the change of power in the country.
According to Bogdov, who commented on the matter to the Russian news agency Interfax, Russia has established a direct connection with the political committee of the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which led the Syrian rebels.
