Bloody violence between Eritrean groups in Israel

The Jerusalem Post reports that over 160 people have been injured in the confrontations described as the most violent between African asylum seekers and migrants in Tel Aviv in years.

Among the injured are around 30 police officers. Several people of the demonstrators are reported to have been hit by police shots. Police also fired tear gas and used stun grenades against protesters.

Smashed shop windows

Various props such as timber, stones and pieces of metal were used by protesters on both sides. An ax is also said to have been used during the fights, which took place in a district in the southern parts of the city where many migrants and asylum seekers live. The AP news agency reports that protesters were seen smashing shop windows and attacking police cars. An Eritrean regime supporter has been seen lying in a pool of blood in a playground after the clashes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that he will convene a meeting to be held on Sunday where measures against those who participated in the clashes will be discussed.
