Leonardo DiCaprio has fans to thank for many great performances. One of his most entertaining is on TV today. Gangs of New York is visually stunning, in love with detail and extremely gory. No wonder, since the film came from the hands of master director Martin Scorsese.

He has once again attacked his bustling hometown, but in the middle of the 19th century. Brutal gangs like the Bowery Boys and the Dead Rabbits rule the slums. In a street fight, young Vallon (as an adult: DiCaprio) loses his father (Liam Neeson). Sixteen years later, he returns to exact revenge on his killer (Daniel Day-Lewis).

Gangs of New York has all the ingredients of a perfect period film. Hard battles, skillfully created sets and costumes and beyond that, a story that launches the spirit of a new era.
DiCaprio, and Day-Lewis in particular, bring this lavish setting to life, letting the hate and greed and despair of their characters, betrayed by fate and history, simmer. The rest is gory action entertainment, like two gangs in brilliantly staged scenes attack each other with hammers, clubs and knives.
Not everyone liked the extremely rich historical film. Some critics found him aimless and confused, with more ambition for his equipment than his characters (via Metacritic). But if a bit of self-love and the sometimes quite high level of violence don’t bother you, then the film is warmly recommended.

Gangs of New York is on tomorrow, Sunday, August 14, 2022, at 0.50 a.m. on ARD. In addition to DiCaprio, Neeson and Day-Lewis, the cast also includes Cameron Diaz, Brendan Gleeson and John C. Reilly. The film has a length of 168 minutes without commercials.
