In Greece, penalties for football violence were tightened last year.
The problem of violence in Greek football came to the fore again late on Saturday night, when Panathinaikos and Larnaca supporters clashed before a friendly match between the teams.
For example, news about it Swedish newspaper Expressenwho, citing Greek sources, said that the police had arrested 72 football supporters.
At least three people were injured: a 25-year-old man was beaten, a 22-year-old man was stabbed, and a 38-year-old man was shot in the left leg. None of them should be in danger of death.
The Greek police are investigating the clash, but have not caught the shooter at least. No weapon has been found either.
In Greece, there have been several bloodbaths during and in connection with football matches in recent years. For example, last August, a 29-year-old man was stabbed to death in an incident on the eve of the Champions League qualifying match between AEK Athens and Croatian Dinamo Zagreb. In addition, at least eight were injured.
The news agency AFP reported last year that penalties for football violence were tightened in Greece after a 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos was stabbed to death in Thessaloniki in February 2022. At that time, the situation escalated into a fight between local supporters of Aris Thessaloniki and PAOK.
