Bloody Christmas Eve attack on refugee camp in central Gaza

On Christmas Eve night, at least 68 people are said to have been killed in an Israeli airstrike against the Maghazi camp, which is close to the city of Deir al-Balah, in central Gaza.

The information comes from the health authority in Hamas-controlled Gaza, and several of the dead are said to be refugees who fled the intense fighting in the north.

– We fled Gaza City, because they said it was safer in the central Gaza Strip. We came, but here too we become victims, says Ahmad Turkomani to AP.

According to the UN, around 33,000 people live in the refugee camp, which was established in 1948 and largely consists of dense housing.

Children among the dead

The figures have not been verified by independent actors, but the AP news agency, which is on the ground, reports that several dead and injured are seen at the scene, some of whom are children.

– They target civilians. We are targets. No place is safe, says Ahmad Turkomani, who according to AP lost several family members in the attack, including his daughter and granddaughter.
