Spartacus has a famous hero but doesn’t stick to the story that closely
For the most part, the series follows a fictional storyline, which, however, is based on the most important historical events. The focus is on a Thracian soldier who is separated from his wife against his will and ends up in servitude as a slave and later as a gladiator in Italy. From his new Roman master he gets the name Spartacus. In Italy, he experiences oppression from the upper classes and decides to initiate an uprising.
The series was overshadowed by a heavy loss
In early 2010, the 1st season was released with the subtitle Blood and Sand. Welshman Andy Whitfield starred. When Whitfield needed treatment for cancer, Starz commissioned a prequel season called Gods of the Arena to tide him over. This takes place before the arrival of Spartacus in Capua.

Because of his illness, Whitfield retired from the role. On September 11, 2011, the actor died.
The broadcaster Starz had meanwhile announced the Australian Liam McIntyre as the successor in the Spartacus role. McIntyre played the slave, gladiator, and insurgent in two more seasons.

Why the series is still worth it
Spartacus was seen as a slightly dumber, action-oriented take on HBO’s ROM when it first came out. Even then, she was characterized by the representation of queer characters (more on this at QueerVoices), which in part also set her apart positively from series like Game of Thrones. In addition to a lot of bare skin, Spartacus is mainly waiting for you with martial action scenes, intrigues and a, let’s say “dubious” charm, which is served too seldom in the age of quality series.

A sequel was announced this year
Spartacus is supposed to go on, by the way. In February, it was announced that series creator Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) would return for a sequel.
Starz has ordered the series sequel, DeKnight is on board as showrunner.
