On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, which will be held on June 14, 2023, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) is launching a major collection campaign in prestigious and emblematic places throughout France. An initiative that could help attract more donors to cope with low inventory levels.
The Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Panthéon, the Town Hall in Marseille, the auditorium of the Opéra de Dijon… These prestigious places will be the scene of a vast campaign to collect blood. The goal? Motivate new donors to travel to discover at the same time magnificent places that they may have never visited. Several collections in different cities are organized throughout the month of June.
Thousands of missing pockets
During the summer period, the donors come less and the reserves decrease. In this context, the EFS is mobilizing and trying to find ways to bring in new donors. In interview given to our colleagues from Franceinfo, the director of the French Blood Establishment in Ile-de-France, Stéphane Noel, recalls that current stocks are too low. He estimates that “to be able to spend the summer serenely“, it would take 10,000 to 20,000 more blood bags by July 14. Today, the stock amounts to 90,000 blood bags.
Stéphane Noel also insisted on the many emergency situations that may require blood transfusions that will save lives: “people who have a road accident or mothers who are going to have a hemorrhage during delivery will need to be taken care of. Hence the importance of people mobilizing and coming to donate blood.”
Who can give and where to give?
You can give blood if you are between 18 and 70 and weigh more than 50 kilos. To find out if you can make a donation, the EFS offers a online testing.

On Wednesday, June 14, collections are organized at the Panthéon, in Paris, at the Hôtel de ville in Marseille and at the auditorium of the Opéra de Dijon. On Thursday June 15, the Opéra de Montpellier and the Zénith de Saint-Etienne will open their doors to donors.
