Block of ice cracked man’s head – hotel manager in Växjö acquitted

A man in his 30s was about to enter a pub in Växjö on a Saturday evening in December 2021 when a block of ice suddenly came flying from the roof and hit him in the head.

The block of ice hit the man with such force that he had to go to the emergency room with crush injuries and cracks in his head.

Thought he was going to die

The man has told in questioning that it felt like he had a hole in his head and that he would die on the spot.

Two years later, charges were brought against the hotel manager when the prosecutor believed that he was ultimately responsible for the safety of the property, and for the snow and ice removal.

Had posted warning signs

Earlier that week, the hotel manager had asked staff to block off the sidewalk and put up signs warning of falling ice blocks, which was done.

However, the man who was hit by the ice should not have been standing on the sidewalk, but outside the barriers, despite this, the district court thinks that these measures were sufficient and acquits the hotel manager.
