Blizzard hints at what fans have been waiting for for years: A Warcraft TV series

Warcraft could be getting a series or even a movie soon. Where are the rumors coming from? Blizzard fuels them themselves.

In recent years, Warcraft fans have had to gnash their teeth at the fact that more and more successful video game franchises have been given their own TV adaptations. Dragon Age, Witcher, League of Legends, Dota and a few others got their own series and most of them did surprisingly well. But now there are some hints that hope is burgeoning again – because Warcraft or other Blizzard universes could get new films.

Where does hope come from? Even if it takes a little wishful thinking, the ambiguous statements come from Blizzard. On Twitter, the user “DNAngel” said that we “need a sequel for the Warcraft movie” and tagged Blizzard and Mike Ybarra. He replied:

I’m not sure about a film, but there are definitely some stories we want to tell.

As if that wasn’t suspicious enough, he then tagged Chris Metzen, the former Warcraft story guru. He in turn replied:

As a matter of fact! But a movie also sounds fun. 🙂

It is particularly noticeable that Ybarra tagged Chris Metzen in his tweet. Because his current position at Blizzard is a bit uncertain and not very clearly defined. While he was hired a few months ago as a “creative advisor” to help the World of Warcraft team with future storytelling, he is said to “work on other projects in the growing franchise” after that.

That could be games – but a film or a series would also be possible.

Why now? In recent years, video game adaptations that have been endowed with a suitably large budget have been extremely successful. Whether you take Arcane, Witcher or Cyberpunk: Edgerunner, all have been well received by fans. The year 2023 is no different. “The Last of Us” is the most successful series of the year and the Mario film is the most successful cinema film of the year so far.

The “curse” that has long hung over video game adaptations seems to have been broken. So it would only be logical that Blizzard would also think about bringing Warcraft to the big screen or TV sets again.

How likely is that? That’s hard to say at the moment. Of course, what Metzen and Ybarra said on Twitter could be simple thoughts that mean nothing. However, it is also conceivable that Activision Blizzard wants to try again after the great success of video game series and films in recent years.

As soon as more reliable information becomes available, we will of course report on it.
