Blizzard accidentally nerfs the hardest boss in WoW too hard, but doesn’t change anything now

For many guilds, the last current boss in World of Warcraft is now easier to defeat. Blizzard nerfed Scale Commander Sarkareth, but overshot the mark. Now it stays that way, despite the accident.

Which boss is it?

  • Scale Commander Sarkareth is the final boss in the current raid Aberrus.
  • According to the current status, only 191 guilds worldwide have mythically laid the boss in the highest level of difficulty (via wowprogress, as of June 22nd).
  • In a hotfix, Blizzard nerfed the boss properly, but apparently much harder than intended.
  • This is the nerf: One of the core mechanics of combat is Obliteration. Several of Sarkareth’s abilities miss a stack of this effect, dealing increasing damage per stack. At 10 stacks, the effect dissipates and you are shifted to another phase.

Typically, these stacks only last 25 seconds, so you can “fade out” them. In mythic mode, however, the effect lasts for 20 minutes, so a lot of damage quickly accumulates here.

Before the nerf, Obliterate did 15,830 damage per second per stack. Blizzard wanted to mitigate that by 10%. However, players found out that the ability actually does almost a third less damage: only 10,619.

Blizzard nerfs too hard, apologizes but sticks with it

As Community Manager Kaivax writes in the official forum, the nerf is actually harder than planned. He apologizes for the confusion that has arisen, but also says that they don’t want to change anything for now.

After reassessing the situation, it was concluded that the new value should now be maintained. However, there is no more detailed explanation of the decision.

However, the nerf has a mixed reception from the community in the forum. While the adjustment to Sarkareth is at least nodded, some players ask why the difficulty is being adjusted here.

Sarkareth is not the boss that the majority of guilds are just breaking their teeth on. These are Rashok and Zskarn, with the latter becoming significantly stronger with a patch. These two are currently the big blocks for the community, not the final boss.

Even Neyssa, a member of the Community Council, agrees, saying, “I guess now Zskarn is the toughest boss in the raid.” She’s hoping for nerfs for the boss, but whether they’ll come is yet to be seen. Maybe something will happen with the next patch that is coming up soon:
