The Israeli army says it has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria in recent days. According to UN experts, the attacks violate international law.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended Israel’s repeated airstrikes in Syria on Thursday. According to the foreign minister, the purpose of the attacks is to prevent the ousted president Bashar al-Assad the administration’s weapons ending up in the “wrong hands”.
– The stated purpose of Israel’s actions is to ensure that military equipment abandoned by the Syrian army does not end up in the wrong hands: terrorists, extremist groups, and so on. But we are already having, and will have, discussions with Israel and also others about how to proceed, Blinken said during a visit to Jordan.
The Israeli armed forces have said that they have carried out hundreds of strikes against military targets and assets of the former regime in Syria in recent days. It has claimed to have destroyed, among other things, missiles, anti-aircraft batteries, weapons production plants, tanks and fighter jets.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an organization monitoring the war in Syria, said that Israel had carried out airstrikes on the port of Latakia and warehouses in Tartus, among other things.
According to UN experts, Israel’s attacks on Syria violate international law. According to the Qatari media al-Jazeera, Israel’s efforts to disarm the enemies “preemptively” are illegal.
– There is no basis in international law to preemptively disarm a country you don’t like, UN special rapporteur Ben Saul told reporters in Geneva, according to al-Jazeera.
– If this were the case, it would be a recipe for global chaos, he continued.
