Marcus Berg puts the football boots on the shelf.
Then IFK Gothenburg icon Glenn Hysén complains.
– Guys like this don’t grow on trees, he says to Sportbibeln.
Due to a back injury that requires surgery has Marcus Berg, 37, together with IFK Göteborg’s medical team decided to end his football career, the club announced on its website. In the Allsvenskan there were a total of 179 matches and 71 goals. In addition to Blåvitt, Berg has played in clubs such as Groningen, Krasnodar, Hamburg and Panathinaikos. In the national team, the striker scored 24 goals in 90 games.
Praised by Hysén
Someone who was very disappointed by the news is the former IFK Gothenburg player and current supporter Glenn Hysen.
– I think it’s a damn shame that he quits, he still has a lot to give. And Blåvitt right now is damn good, so he would probably have made a couple more tubs. So I just think it’s sad that he’s quitting. It’s a damn good soccer player, says Hysén to Sportbibeln.

How do you think it feels for Berg to have to end his career like this in the middle of the season due to an injury?
– It is clear that it is difficult, I suffer with him. It’s clear as hell, this wasn’t how you wanted it to end. But health comes before everything else.

Mountain in Blåvitt
Marcus Berg joined IFK Göteborg’s academy as a youngster and then played in the club’s first team between 2005–2007 and 2021–2023. In 2007, he became a SM gold medalist with the club, and he has meant a lot to the association, says Hysén.
– He has been important with his whole behavior, he is a damn good person. He is an example of a footballer, everyone should be like him, towards supporters and everything. Blåvitt doesn’t just lose a good player, they lose a good person too.

Hysén hopes that IFK Göteborg arranges a role within the club for Berg now that he stops playing football.
– We have to hope that they might be able to keep him in the club in some way, in some form. Because I mean, guys like this don’t grow on trees. He will do a great job, whatever he does for something in Blåvitt.
