When you make purchases on the Internet, you may be confronted without realizing it with certain scams or fraudulent sites. It is therefore important to take a few precautions to make secure purchases online. Benoit Grunemwald, cybersecurity expert at ESET France, shares his advice:

  • Beware of overly attractive offers

Too low a promotion can in some cases hide a scam. Check if the site is reliable and if other promotions of this type have already been made or are available on other merchant sites.

  • Use a secure connection

It is better to favor secure networks such as your home network from home or professional from your office to make purchases online. Thanks to these networks, some fraudulent sites can be blocked. Also consider using devices that have recently been updated.

  • Check site URLs

If the merchant site URL looks suspicious because it has strange signs, a name that has nothing to do with the site or because the domain extension (the most popular .fr and .com) are different so beware. Also look in detail at the content of the site, if it is a renowned commercial site there should not be a priori any spelling errors that are obvious.

  • Read shipping and return policies

To check if returns or refunds are possible in case of defective or counterfeit items.

  • Review your bank statements

During Black Friday but also the end of the year or sales periods, remember to check the activity of your bank account. If fraud is detected quickly, you will have a better chance of being compensated by your bank.

How long does Black Friday last?

In principle, Black Friday lasts only one day, the time of a Friday. But in France, merchants and e-commerce sites sometimes take the opportunity to extend the event for a few additional days, ie several days before or during the following weekend.

When does Black Friday start and end in 2022?

Usually, and as the name suggests, Black Friday takes place on the last Friday of November. This year in 2022, Black Friday officially starts Friday, November 25 at midnight on the Internet and as soon as physical stores open. For some brands, Black Friday ends the same day, but not for all. For some years now, Black Friday has extended over the weekend and ends with Cyber Monday, another day dedicated to promotions and deals. According to the calendar, Cyber Monday falls Monday, November 28, 2022.

Black Friday was initiated in the United States in the 1950s. It is a custom that follows an emblematic holiday for Americans, namely Thanksgiving. In French, this day translates as “black Friday”. It is called this way because the proposed reductions are so important, that at the time the accounts books of the traders went from red, in other words from the deficit, to black, they were making a profit again.
