A launch was held Thursday at Sons of Kent Brewing Co. for the second-annual Black Excellence Awards and Gala.
The event committee, in collaboration with Buxton’s Next Generation and the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, announced an expanded program including multiple activities throughout February, capping off with the gala on March 1 at Retro Suites.
“Our mission is to elevate and celebrate the community,” co-chair Doug Robbins said. “Not only our community, but the greater community that supports us.
“We have very broad hopes for this year.”
Similar to before, members of the public can nominate individuals for various categories, including youth of the year, female, male, agriculturist, entrepreneur and citizen. A trailblazer award, chosen separately, will also be announced.

There will also be a youth expo, along with celebrations of Black culture, music and food at different local venues.
“It’s ambitious. There’s a lot going on,” Robbins said.
Michelle Robbins and Shannon Prince return as co-chairs this year.
“I think it’s important to highlight all the aspects,” Michelle Robbins said. “We had great support. Last year was amazing.”
She encouraged people to visit Black historical museums and sites throughout Chatham-Kent during that time as well.
Representatives from lead sponsor, Enbridge, and Mainstreet Credit Union also were on hand Thursday to discuss the importance of being involved in the cause.
