Björn Borg’s honest confession about his son Leo Borg – that’s why the icon didn’t want him to play tennis

Björn Borg is one of Swedish sports’ greatest icons.
Now the legend reveals that he did not want to see his son Leo Borg start playing tennis.
– I hoped he would choose another sport, says father Borg to SVT.

There are few Swedish athletes who can measure up Björn Borg’s incredible track record and the great imprint he left. The 66-year-old is not only one of Sweden’s greatest icons, but also one of the world’s best tennis players of all time.

Borg won a total of 63 singles titles, including five straight Wimbledon and four straight French Open titles. In connection with the turn of the millennium, the tennis icon was also named “Swedish athlete of the century” by the Swedish Sports Academy, ahead of big names like Ingemar Stenmark and Ingemar Johansson.

Now the son has Leo Borg followed in dad’s footsteps and broke into the big tennis scene. The 19-year-old has played the Davis Cup with Sweden during the winter and also impressed in the latest edition of the Stockholm Open.

Son Leo Borg

Borg the younger was also the one who climbed the most in the world ranking in 2022 and is now ranked 521 in the tennis world. Now father Borg admits that he didn’t even want his son to start the same sport in which he himself conquered the world.
– I hoped he would choose another sport. First he played football and he was very good at it. But then he wanted to play tennis and he decides for himself what he wants to do, says Björn Borg in a television interview according to SVT Sport.
– He loves tennis, his heart beats for tennis. He is motivated and he is only 19 years old, he has many years ahead of him.

The father has also tried to help the son with valuable tips – but then the teenager usually responds with the most unexpected words.
– Sometimes I ask my son if there is something he is wondering about, I say: “If you have a problem with something, you can always ask me”. But then my son replies: “You know nothing about tennis”. Haha, thank you very much for that one, says Borg with a laugh in the interview.

Björn Borg wants to be clear that he has full confidence in his son and that he is very serious about his tennis venture.
– My wife and I support him one hundred percent. He has his life, his tennis, his team and he enjoys it very much, he says in the TV interview.
