Bitter fantasy flop starring Vin Diesel buried an entire fantasy

Vin Diesel’s career is built on three major film series, all of which have their roots in the early 2000s. While the actor has infrequent returns as Riddick and Xander Cage, his biggest role to date is Dom Toretto in the Fast & Furious films franchise success. Seven years ago he wanted to add another entry to this list.

We’re talking about The Last Witch Hunter, a fantasy blockbuster in the tradition of well-known role-playing games. The film tells the story of that Witch Hunter Kaulder. It is the last of its kind and has seen many centuries. Now he fights against supernatural creatures in contemporary New York. According to Diesel, the character was inspired by his own Dungeons & Dragons character.

It’s not often that actors declare the start of a new franchise as their big passion project. Most of the time, it’s the smaller, more offbeat and more personal films that reveal themselves as a matter of the heart of a filmmaker. But diesel was fire and flame for The Last Witch Hunter and gave everything. Nevertheless, the film turns out to be another Vin Diesel disappointment.

From a financial as well as from a qualitative point of view, The Last Witch Hunter could not convince. The $90 million production reaped the rewards mostly negative reviews. At the end of its theatrical run, the film had grossed just $147 million. In its native US, it was just $27 million, which is a disaster for a franchise starter looking to show interest.

Before The Last Witch Hunter universe could even come into being, it was buried. Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, has had the cloak of silence over the planned sequel. The last sign of life was two years ago. At the time, Diesel told Collider succinctly and cryptically that Part 2 was in “active development” located.

However, we shouldn’t be too hopeful. The Last Witch Hunter 2 has official site to date didn’t get the green light. The pop culture impact left by Diesel’s passion project is limited. However, if Diesel continues to fight just as passionately, we may one day have another adventure with Kaulder after all.
