Biting satire wins audience award in Toronto

The film, which is based on Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, is Jefferson’s directorial debut. He is otherwise known as the screenwriter of series such as “Watchmen” and “Succession”.

The people’s award at North America’s largest film festival is voted for by the audience and is usually an early indicator of where the Oscar statuette for best film ends up, as was the case with “Green book” in 2018 and “Nomadland” in 2020. Last year, the award went to Steven Spielberg’s family chronicle “The Fabelmans” .

Other films celebrated at this year’s festival were Alexander Payne’s “The holdovers” starring Paul Giamatti and Hayao Miyazaki’s animated fantasy film “The boy and the heron”.

The Swedish entries, Axel Petersén’s “Sindabokken” and Lukas Moodysson’s “Together 99”, were awarded no prizes.
