You can recognize sick birds quite well, says Van der Heijden. “Often they have neurological signs, such as a crooked head position. If there is a doubt, they are euthanized.” Waterfowl in particular are high-risk birds, such as ducks, swans and geese. They are immediately quarantined at the bird shelter.
