Biography Georgina Steytler Nature photographer writer conservationist bird

I am a nature photographer with a passion for birds, ethics and conservation. I grew up in an orchard in Donnybrook, a small country town in Western Australia, where I developed a love of nature.

My interest in photography became a passion over ten years ago when I quit my corporate job and started volunteering with BirdLife WA. Since then I have been photographing for conservation organizations across Australia (for free), and teaching the art and ethics of bird photography through workshops, lectures and articles.

The highlight of my photography career came in 2018 when I became the first Australian woman to win a category (Invertebrates : behavior) in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the world’s largest nature photography competition. My other major achievements include Bird Photographer of the Year (Best Portfolio and Creative Prize), Grand Prix Winner of EAAFP Waterbirds Photo Contest, Australian Photography Awards (Wildlife) and Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year (Portfolio Prize).

I currently live in Albany with my husband and a handsome Belgian Shepherd, although a little demanding.

Photographic philosophy

I am a self-taught photographer. Over the years I have tried to master the technical aspects of nature photography, while developing a eye for an aesthetically pleasing composition. My favorite saying is attributed to Pablo Picasso: “Learn the rules like a pro. Break them like an artist. I also believe that as a nature photographer, I have a duty to do everything in my power to minimize our impact and help conserve our natural world. In this regard, my photographic philosophy can be summed up in these three words: Art. Preservation. Ethics.
