Advertisements for cheap, mass-produced fashion clothes could be banned in France if a new bill is passed. Charges based on environmental impact and carbon dioxide emissions, similar to those already imposed in the car industry, are also proposed, reports Euronews.

The growing supply of cheap clothing affects consumer buying habits by creating a constant need for renewal, the proposal warns, with negative environmental, social and economic consequences as a result.

The proposal is specifically aimed at Chinese clothing giant Shein, which releases more than 7,000 new garments a day. This allows prices to be pushed down, forcing other brands to increase production in order to compete.

The proposal will be debated by the Committee on Sustainable Development next week before it can move on to the Senate.
