Big leak supposedly shows specs, but PC gamers could be the big winners from the upgrade

A big leak supposedly shows the technical data of the PS5 Pro. MeinMMO explains what’s behind the PS5 Pro leak. PC gamers in particular should benefit in the long term if AMD uses its technology in more than just the new PS5.

Where does the leak come from? The well-known leaker Tom Henderson already reported on InsiderGaming about the possible leak of the technical specs of the PS5 Pro. Tom Henderson is considered very reliable when it comes to leaks. However, you should treat the data mentioned with caution.

The leak in detail:

  • Memory: 576GB/s (18GT/s). In comparison, the regular PS5 only offered 448 GB/s (14 GT/s).
  • CPU: 3.85 GHz, 10% more performance when using High CPU Frequency Mode
  • GPU: 33.5 teraflops
  • 2-3 times better ray tracing performance
  • Support for resolutions up to 8K is planned for future SDK releases
  • AI accelerator that supports 300 TOPS of 8-bit calculations / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point calculations
  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling)
  • Where are the biggest changes? Most of the changes actually occur in the graphics chip. While the performance of the CPU remains almost identical, apart from the High CPU Frequency Mode, the performance of the GPU should increase significantly. After all, we are talking about an increase in performance of up to 45%.

According to another leak, the PS5 Pro will feature a new Zen 4 processor and RDNA3 graphics. AMD is already using Zen 4 in its very successful Ryzen 7000 series processors.

What is PSSR? The graphics chip is said to offer PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling). This is an upscaling and anti-aliasing technology that is intended to provide its own machine learning architecture and AI accelerator. This is reminiscent of AMD’s FSR or Nvidia’s DLSS, but should become an independent technology. Simply put, it renders games at low resolution and then scales them up to full resolution. This saves computing power and older graphics cards in particular benefit from upscaling.

The PS5 leak is also exciting for PC gamers

What does this have to do with the PC? PC gamers could benefit from this upgrade in the long term. If AMD really succeeds in significantly increasing the ray tracing performance on its own chips, then gamers who currently have an AMD graphics card in their computer could also benefit from this. So far, Nvidia has always been ahead of AMD in terms of performance with ray tracing activated.

Although the hardware in consoles is only partially comparable to the hardware in gaming PCs, AMD uses the same architecture for both the PS5 and the RX 6000 generation graphics cards, namely RDNA 2. Consoles also have the advantage of that the individual components are perfectly coordinated with each other.

When it comes to graphics cards, we have now arrived at the RDNA3 architecture. This is the first time AMD has used modular chiplets for graphics cards. It is not yet known whether the new PS5 Pro will also use a modular chip like the RX 7000 models. Both AMD and Sony are adamantly silent here. It is also not known whether AMD is already working on a completely new architecture and will adapt it specifically for a PS5.

If AMD introduces big changes now, it could also mean good news for PC gamers who want to buy an AMD graphics card in the future. Because big and successful changes in graphics architecture will sooner or later arrive on the PC. And significantly improved ray tracing performance should significantly shrink the gap to Nvidia.
