Big fight broke out when Växjö fell in Luleå: “A lot of emotions”

The match between Luleå and Växjö Lakers involved, among other things, a battle between Luleå’s defense, which had conceded two goals in its last four games – and Växjö’s offense, which had accounted for 21 goals during the same period.

In addition, two of the SHL’s absolute top scorers, in the form of scoring league leader Marcus Sylvegård and Oscar Eklind, were pitted against each other. The two Scanias had scored 19 and 15 goals, respectively, before Tuesday evening.

But even though it was Växjö who would try to defend their league lead, it was the home team Luleå and Canadian Brendan Shinnimin who would break the deadlock against his former employer in an early power play.

Afterwards, Pontus Andreasson was also able to extend after a goalie return and Växjö was in the dock before the second period.

Quick reply

But in the opening of the second period, the Småland would respond.

First, Manuel Ågren reduced, before Robert Rosén was able to equalize – 28 seconds later. Then Växjö Lakers had the wind in their sails and a lot said that they would also succeed in getting a lead goal.

But Luleå stopped the bleeding and was instead able to take the lead through Jesper Sellgren at the beginning of the third period.

Växjö then pressed for an equaliser, but instead of offensive distribution, Linus Omark was able to put the match-deciding 4-2 goal into an empty net. That Joachim Bichfeld then managed to reduce with ten seconds left in the match had only an academic significance and Luleå could celebrate an extremely heavy three-pointer on home ice.

Irritated finish

However, the celebration ended at the final whistle. This because tumult broke out on the ice, where there was considerable irritation after a tackle from Robert Rosén in the final second.

– It gets a little hot. There was a lot of struggle in the whole match and there were a lot of emotions at the end, I hope it goes well for the Luleå player, said a forward Jörgen Jönsson, who did not have a clear picture of the tackle that his player put in:

– I don’t really have time to understand it, you probably won’t get good answers from me today.
