The boat carrying refugees from Antalya with the aim of reaching Italy capsized off the Greek island of Karpathos in the Aegean Sea. In the statement made by the Greek Coast Guard, it was reported that nearly 50 people were missing.
WORKS STARTED EARLY
Coast Guard spokesman Nikos Kokkalas said that the rescued refugees informed that there were 60-80 people on the boat that set off from Antalya and that they were on their way to Italy.
Kokkalas told Greek state television that the boat capsized and sank off the island of Karpathos. Kokkalas stated that the search and rescue efforts started early in the morning despite the strong wind.
Another coast guard official, who did not want to be named, said the rescued refugees were citizens of Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq.
