The turnout for the 2018 City Council was 84 percent across the country. But the differences between the municipalities are large. As many as 30 percentage points differ in turnout between Lomma, where 93 percent voted, and Haparanda, where 63 percent voted.
With the help of a new analysis tool from Statistics Sweden (SCB), the statistics can be broken down at even lower levels within the municipalities. It is also possible to decide which areas are to be studied based on the proportion of young, older, foreign-born Swedish citizens, foreign citizens and the proportion with pre- and post-secondary education.
“Then even greater differences emerge. In Lomma, Bjärred Södra had the highest turnout with 96 percent of the vote. In Haparanda city north, the turnout was 54 percent, which was the lowest in the municipality,” says Stefan Svanström, expert on geographical information systems at Statistics Sweden, in a press release.
At the regional level across the country, Södra Ängby in Stockholm tops the statistics with a turnout of 97 percent. The lowest was in Hovsjö in Södertälje, where 46 percent voted.
