Biden’s message: “The truce goes into effect tonight”

On Tuesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he was urging the government to approve the proposal.

US President Joe Biden appeared later and announced that a ceasefire will come into effect at 04 local time on Wednesday (03 Swedish time).

– I spoke with the prime ministers of Israel and Lebanon and can announce that they have accepted the US proposal, said the president during the press conference.

Massive attacks on Tuesday

Middle East expert Alexander Atarodi said in SVT’s live broadcast that it is a step away from the “miserable development” that has taken place in the region since October 7 last year.

The expected announcement of the ceasefire has been marred by attacks. Earlier on Tuesday, Israel’s army, the IDF, launched massive airstrikes against Beirut.

Later in the evening, the IDF also attacked a building in a densely populated neighborhood in Beirut, Reuters reports, while air raid sirens were heard in several locations in Israel, according to Haaretz.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs: “Very positive”

The draft agreement deals, among other things, with a transition period of 60 days, during which Israeli forces must withdraw from southern Lebanon. Hezbollah, in turn, must withdraw from the border with Israel.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) writes in a comment to SVT that the announcement is “very positive”.

“Civil suffering has for a long time been great on both sides. The government continues to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of the hostages and the resumption of serious efforts towards a two-state solution.”
