US President Joe Biden has issued a presidential order to strengthen the country’s biotech sector.

The president wants to strengthen government-backed initiatives to coordinate and finance the fight against cancer, with the goal of halving the disease’s death rate within the next 25 years.

Biden spoke about the initiative when he was in Boston to deliver a speech deliberately inspired by former President John F Kennedy’s famous moon speech from more than 60 years ago. Then Kennedy declared that the United States would put a man on the moon, something that was carried out in 1969.

Biden’s order provides federal support to “areas that will define America’s biotech leadership and our economic competitiveness for decades to come,” a senior Biden administration official said.
