The passage of the package is complicated by the situation in the House of Representatives, where the lower house of Congress is still without a chairman.
President of the United States Joe Biden asked the US Congress on Friday for an urgent security package of 106 billion dollars, or almost 100 billion euros, a significant part of which would be directed to Israel and Ukraine.
From the package, more than 60 billion dollars would be directed to arms aid to Ukraine, 14 billion dollars to Israel and 9 billion dollars to humanitarian aid to Gaza, Ukraine and Israel.
In his speech this week, Biden linked the attack by Hamas to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, with which he tried to convince Americans that the country should show international leadership. In his speech, Biden sought to gain support for aid to Ukraine, as aid packages to Israel have gained more support in the Republican camp as well.
Especially the Republicans, but also a growing part of the voters have opposed the continuation of arms aid to Ukraine. Instead, there is still significant support for support for Ukraine in Congress.
The passage of the package is complicated by the situation in the House of Representatives, where the lower house of Congress is still without a chairman.
Ukraine confident
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi thanked Biden for proposing the aid package.
– We trust that both parties in Congress will turn the curve of history towards good.
Instead, Russia condemned Biden’s speech, in which he linked the Russian attack to Hamas.
– This kind of rhetoric is not suitable for a person who calls himself a responsible leader, and in our opinion, such rhetoric is in no way acceptable. We do not accept such talk about Russia and the Russian president, comments the Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Biden’s security package also includes $14 billion in aid to manage the migrant crisis at the border with Mexico. Of this, a good 6 billion dollars would be directed to security, which has been a major concern, especially for the right.
The package also includes $7 billion for the Asia-Pacific region, where the United States is fighting for allies with China.
