Kirby argued that Russia is responsible for Navalny’s death, no matter what message it gives to the world on this subject, and said, “President Putin and his government are responsible for the death of Mr. Navalny. In response, in line with President Biden’s instructions, on Friday, Russia “We will hold them accountable and announce a comprehensive sanctions package.” he said.
Kirby, who did not include the content of the sanctions package, emphasized that with this package, Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held responsible for both Navalny’s death and his attacks in Ukraine.
Kirby stated that Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continue and that they expect the new support package to be passed by Congress as soon as possible to support Kiev.
PUNISHMENT AND DEATH OF NAVALNIY
Russian Federal Prison Service reported on February 16 that convicted dissident Alexei Navalny died in prison and that the cause of death would be investigated.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitriy Peskov, in his statement, stated that the Federal Prison Service is investigating the causes of Navalny’s death within the framework of certain rules and that there is no need for any instructions for this, adding, “Doctors will carry out the necessary investigations.” He used the expression.
Alexei Navalny, an opponent of the Kremlin, was arrested at the airport on his return to the capital Moscow on January 17, 2021, after receiving treatment in Berlin, the capital of Germany, for allegedly being poisoned.
At the request of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service, the case filed against Navalny in the Moscow City Court on February 2, 2021 was concluded; Navalny’s 3.5-year suspended prison sentence, given as a result of the corruption case in the past, was converted to a normal prison sentence on the grounds that he did not fulfill the conditions of judicial control.
The Russian court sentenced Navalny, who was in prison in August 2023, to 19 years in prison for creating an extremist community.
