A few prisoners are going to remain in Guantanamo even after the end of Biden’s term.
The United States has released a Tunisian who had been there for more than 20 years from the Guantanamo prison By Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazid (59).
Yazidi is the fourth prisoner to be released in the last two weeks, says The New York Times. Joe Biden in its last days, the administration is trying to fulfill the promise of emptying the prison that operated in the gray area of international law.
After Yazid’s departure, 26 prisoners remain in the prison, 14 of which are already ready to be transferred to other countries, if an agreement can be reached with the countries. Yazidi had to wait 11 months for his own transfer to Tunisia.
The legal proceedings of the nine prisoners are still pending, so they are at least not eligible to be transferred from prison before the end of Biden’s term.
Yazidi was brought to Guantanamo on January 11, 2002, i.e. right after the prison opened. He had been caught on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He was suspected of being one of the terrorist leaders Bin Laden’s of bodyguards. No charges were ever brought against Yazid.
