Biathlon: The Swedish team threw away the chance of victory at Stockholm’s stadium

Eight teams squared off at Stockholm’s stadium, where one stretch involved two laps around the running track before each shoot. Sweden had two teams and it was the team with Elvira Öberg and Martin Ponsiluoma that was the best.

After two shots, Elvira Öberg ensured that the team was in the lead. But in the third shooting there was a penalty round for Martin Ponsiluoma, so then the team dropped to fifth place.

Behind Ponsiluoma was Sebastian Samuelsson (who competed with Mona Brorsson) as he was also forced into a penalty round in his first shooting of the day.

“Had a little extra tension”

Afterwards, Ponsiluoma said that the special competition with around 10,000 spectators contributed to higher nervousness.

– You had a little extra tension because you have not done a competition like this before, says Martin Ponsiluoma.

Öberg/Ponsiluoma stayed in fifth place until the end, just over half a minute behind leading Norway (with Juni Arnekleiv and Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen).

In the final shootout, Ponsiluoma got past Austria and came fourth, just six seconds off the podium. For Brorsson and Samuelsson, it was sixth place at the finish line.

The Norwegian team held up to the pressure and won the competition ahead of Germany and France.
