Although many people in the community have high cholesterol, they are not aware that they have this disease. Untreated cholesterol is known to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. In order to control high cholesterol, it is necessary to stay away from foods that will raise cholesterol.
FOODS CONTAINING CHOLESTEROL
EGG YOLK
Eggs are often considered one of the worst sources of dietary cholesterol. A single egg contains about 186 milligrams of cholesterol, which is more than half of the maximum recommended daily intake. All of this cholesterol is found in the yolk.
CHEESE
Cheese is another big culprit when it comes to cholesterol. While a little cheese in your diet won’t hurt, it can quickly become a major source of dietary cholesterol.
Organ meats such as liver are known to be rich in vitamins and nutrients. While this makes them an excellent part of many diets, they are not a great choice for people trying to lower their cholesterol.
SARDINE
Similar to shrimp, sardines are a powerful source of seafood cholesterol.
Fast food tends to be high in fried fat and almost always contains some type of animal product that can make it bad for your cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that eating regularly at fast-food restaurants leads to an increase in cholesterol and can even lower “good” cholesterol.
ALTERNATIVES TO CHOLESTEROL CONTAINING FOODS
EGG WHITE
Egg whites do not contain cholesterol and can be used as a substitute for whole eggs in many recipes.
LOW FAT CHEESE
Low-fat cheeses tend to be lower in cholesterol than full-fat cheeses.
WHITE MEATS
Look for options like chicken instead of dark meats like beef. Even if you eat the skin, chicken breast has less than a quarter of the cholesterol per serving compared to beef liver.
BAKED FOODS
Fast food is often fried in hydrogenated oils that are high in trans fat and can raise LDL cholesterol levels. Baked foods do not add any fat or oil and may therefore have lower cholesterol.
