Better safety is required after the fatal accident at Kebnekaise

The accident occurred on February 21 this year during a military exercise when an avalanche occurred on the southern slope of Kebnekaise. A soldier from K 4 in Arvidsjaur was dragged into the avalanche and died.

The Work Environment Agency has finished its inspection and is now demanding better investigations and risk assessments from the Armed Forces.

Among other things, the authority wants to see better investigations into the risks that exist for those who put ropes on Kebnekaise and may accidentally walk too close to the edge of the ridge where there are hanging drifts.

Better consideration must also be given to the dangers that climate change can entail.

“The worker who died walked close to the edge of the ridge where the hanging drive hung outside”.

The Work Environment Agency requires that the Swedish Armed Forces improve its work environment work on a further number of points, otherwise the operation risks an injunction or ban.
