Best Wizard Build – How to Control the Elements with Dragon Magic

If you want to deal a lot of damage with magic in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Sorcerer class is a good choice. You can find out how best to go about building your character in this guide.

What can the magician do? The Wizard is one of the few classes that is not represented by any of the possible companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 by default. Nevertheless, it is very worthwhile to take a closer look at the class.

As a wizard, you have the power to cast and even modify powerful spells. You prefer to stand in the back rows and deal a lot of damage from there.

Compared to the related magicians, wizards cannot exchange their spells at will. In return, they receive powerful bonuses that vary depending on their subclass, as well as the opportunity to use metamagic to make their spells even stronger.

This is precisely why the wizard is one of the more complex classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can find out which class is particularly beginner-friendly here:

Wizard Build – Best subclass

Even at level 1, as a wizard you have to choose one of three subclasses.

  • Wild magic
  • Dragon bloodline
  • Storm magic
  • One of the most fun subclasses in the entire game is probably Wild Magic. Due to their unpredictability, chaotic and terribly funny situations can arise again and again.

But if you want a really reliable damage beast for your team, you should rely on the Dragon Bloodline. This gives you the opportunity to specialize in one element. In addition, you will become a lot more resilient. In this guide we will therefore delve further into this subclass.

Which item should I choose? As a member of the dragon bloodline, you can choose a dragon ancestor for your character. This decides which element you specialize in.

To create a powerful fire mage, we choose red (fire) here. This gives you the powerful Burning Hands spell right at the start. From level 6 onwards, not only is fire damage increased, your character can also become immune to fire damage. Since this type of damage is quite common in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s pretty handy.

    Wizard Build – Character creation

Even through the initial character creation you can receive some bonuses that make your life as a magician easier and should not be underestimated.

When choosing the people, the following options are recommended:

  • Half past ten
  • Darkvision: Helps you keep your distance even in the dark.
  • Fairy Blood: You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed and cannot be magically put to sleep.
  • Human Militia: You get training with some weapons, light armor and shields, making you a little more resilient.
  • Folk subspecies: Here we recommend either the half-high elf for the additional magic trick, or the half-wood elf for the increased movement rate.
  • Drow
  • Superior Darkvision: Even better darkvision than the half-elf.
  • Fairy blood
  • Magic Tricks: Additional spells that can be helpful in some situations.
  • The following are particularly suitable as a background for your character:

  • Sage: Arcane Lore and History skills
  • Nobleman: Skills History and Persuasion
  • Wizard Build – Attributes

The most important attribute for any wizard is charisma. This is where you should definitely invest the most points. A high Constitution score also helps you strengthen your defense. A good distribution to start with is:

  • Strength: 8
  • Dexterity: 14
  • Constitution: 16
  • Intelligence: 10
  • Wisdom: 10
  • Charisma: 16
  • For optimal selection, you should generally only choose even numbers for the points distribution. Because the respective bonuses are only actually increased every two levels.

The high charisma value helps us both in battle and outside of it.

Which skills should I choose? In addition to attribute points, you can choose two skills for your character. You will receive two additional skills based on which background you have chosen.

Make sure you have the Persuade skill, as it can be useful in many situations.

Deception and Intimidation are also good because they are based on your (high) Charisma value.

Wizard Build – The Best Spells

In Baldur’s Gate 3 you have a variety of spells and magic tricks at your disposal. Which one you should choose depends on many factors, especially your team composition and your personal playing style.

You can find out which spells are generally strong in the game here:

As an elemental wizard, you should of course place particular emphasis on all spells in your chosen element, in our case fire. The spell selection across all levels as well as the choice of metamagic could, for example, look like this:

    1. Magic tricks

  • Level 1: Fire Arrow; Bladespell; shock grip; Magician’s hand
  • If you have already chosen one of these magic tricks with the half-high elf racial subtype, use another option instead, such as spraying poison.
  • Level 4: Simple Illusion
  • 2. Spell

  • Level 1: Magic Missile; Chromatic sphere
  • Level 2: Thunderstorm
  • Level 3: Mist Step
  • Level 4: Dagger Cloud
  • Level 5: Fireball
  • Level 6: Counterspell
  • Level 7: Wall of Fire
  • Level 8: Polymorphic
  • Level 9: Telekinesis
  • Level 10: Death Cloud
  • Level 11: Resolution
  • Level 12: Orb of Invulnerability
  • 3. Metamagic

  • Level 2: Far-Ranging Spell; Mirrored magic
  • Level 3: Accelerated Spell
  • Level 10: Concentrated Spell
  • Wizard Build – Talents

At levels 4, 8 and 12 you get the opportunity to choose a talent. The following are recommended:

  • Level 4: Attribute Improvement (Charisma +2)
  • Level 8: Elemental Adept: Fire
  • Level 12: Attribute Improvement (Charisma + 2)
  • You should therefore have brought your Charisma value to the maximum of 20 at level 12.

As an Elemental Adept, you ignore enemy resistances in your element.

We hope that we were able to help you with the guide. Have you tried the Wizard class yet? And if so, what were your experiences with it? Feel free to write it to us in the comments.

In this guide we focused on a pure wizard build. However, in Baldur’s Gate 3 you also have the opportunity to multiclass. You simply mix several classes. For example, if you want to give your wizard more supporting skills, you could invest a few levels in the cleric. You can find all the important basics about multiclassing here: Why newbies should avoid multi-classing in Baldur’s Gate 3 and when does it make sense
