Earlier this week wrote News24 about how a woman got the surprise of her life when she brought two old vases to the English antique shop.
The woman had bought the vases for SEK 13 each – after haggling them down. When the expert in the program then took a closer look at the vases and valued them, it was clear that the vases were worth a breathtaking 13,000 kroner each.
But this year’s season of the English Antikrundan naturally offers several surprises….
The couple in Glasgow bought a painting at a flea market – took it to Antikrundan
20 years ago, a couple from Glasgow walked into a charity shop in the community of Shawlands. There they immediately fell in love with an oil painting with a motif of a couple of houses, cranes and a port in Glasgow. The couple paid SEK 66 for the painting, went home and didn’t think much more of it.
But when the Antikrundan came to visit Glasgow, they took the painting with them for an appraisal – a smart move, it would turn out.

The expert Frances Christie immediately fell in love with the painting, and could quickly tell that it was painted by the local artist Dorothy Steelewho was born in 1927 and died in 2002.
The fact that the painting only cost SEK 66 is something the couple happily joke about in the program.
– We probably paid more to take a taxi home with the painting because it rained that day, said the man’s wife.

The expert Frances told us that Dorothy Steel’s works do not appear very often at auctions, and that they are therefore very valuable.
– If this were to go up for sale now, I would estimate the value at between SEK 40,000 – 66,000. It’s one of the best finds I’ve ever seen, Frances said in the Antiques Roadshow clip BBC.

The couple were extremely shocked by the painting’s value.
“Oh my God,” the woman exclaimed as her speechless husband settled for a “Wow.”
Yes, we really understand their reaction!
