Best advice for keeping children healthy this autumn

With autumn comes the start of school – and viral infections.
Here is the best advice to avoid diseases in children.
– Teach the children to wash their hands, says Johan Holmgren, specialist nurse.

When schools and preschools have been in operation for a few weeks, viral infections usually increase among children. The most common infections are cough, rash and fever. Many people recognize both autumn blisters and chicken pox as typical of the season.

Wash properly

But there are ways to prevent the diseases in the children – or at least improve the odds significantly.
– It’s about teaching the children to wash their hands. When we have been in shopping centers or other public places. In the playground or in the playground where others have been a bit sick, it is important to clean your hands, says Johan Holmgren, specialist nurse.
And it is important to wash correctly. Between the fingers and with two so it lathers properly. Preferably right up to the elbows because you expose the forearms on the table as well.

Don’t panic

Otherwise, it is important to vary the diet, drink fluids and stay at home for 24 hours after being free of fever. The advice from Johan Holmgren is also not to panic about a normal fever and to stay at home 48 hours after the chicken pox has dried if that is the illness you have contracted. Because the biggest mistake parents make is not listening to the guidelines regarding diseases. You must be at home for at least 24 hours after the child is fever-free. Most often the child goes to school the second they are fever-free and then towards lunch the fever appears again and then you are not healthy, says Johan Holmgren.

Wait out the autumn blisters

Another common feature of autumn diseases in children is autumn blisters and chicken pox.
– Autumn blisters are harmless. You can go to preschool with blisters if you are fever-free. Pain relief and cold can help. Then you just have to wait it out, says Johan Holmgren.
