Benin scores its first point after a draw against Rwanda

Beninese Steve Mounié, during CAN 2019.

After a defeat against Senegal (3-1) and another against Mozambique (1-0), Benin continued with a draw, this time against the Rwandans. Gernot Rohr’s men failed to meet the challenge of a first victory in this qualifying campaign for CAN 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire, but limited the damage. In Cotonou, for the 3rd day of playoffs, the Cheetahs of Benin were down 1-0 before the break, after the early opener signed Gibert Mugisha (1-0). While Rwanda found themselves at 10 from the 61st minute, after the expulsion of Hakim Sahabo, the Beninese had to wait for the 82nd minute and the goal of Steve Mounié to pick up the score and score a first point in this race for CAN 2024. Quarter-finalist in 2019, but absent from the last edition, Benin has its work cut out for a new participation in a final phase.
