Bengan Johansson was one of our greatest leaders.
The achievements of the Bengan Boys era are hard to top.
His incredible leadership is proven not least by his list of demands to the players – which were followed during every gathering.

Swedish handball was at its very best under the leadership of legendary coach Bengan Johansson. With his straight and hard style, and with his ability to always have a twinkle in his eye, he became one of our most beloved people, and many believe that there has never been a better leader.

Hugely appreciated

He was the national team captain for a total of 16 international championships, and the merits speak for themselves. In total, there were 13 medals from 1988 to 2004, of which two WC gold, four EC gold and two Olympic silver. Earlier this year, Bengan Johansson passed away after a period of illness. He lived to be 79 years old, and was mourned by an entire country.

But his memory will forever remain, and much of what happens in Swedish handball to this day happens thanks to Bengan Johansson’s leadership. Bengan had an ability to make everyone perform, and to make everyone lift just when it was needed most, and there are many examples and anecdotes about just that.

Incredible list

The Twitter account “HoaHoaKlassiker” has now posted a picture of what was Bengan Johansson’s own list of agreements that applied to all players during his time in the Bengan Boys. The paper begins by clarifying that “there are no rules, but a number of agreements”. These must have been discussed together with the playing squad, and applied during all meetings for the national team. And it really is brilliant reading.

Here’s the full list, in bullet form:

  • Everyone must contribute to the best of their ability with joy, development and community.
  • Fit the times that apply.
  • Take responsibility for when you go to bed at night.
  • Don’t skip any meals.
  • Stay at the dining table until everyone has finished eating.
  • We drink one beer a day, if we drink any.
  • Bring the sponsor clothing you received from the association.
  • Sing along to the national anthem. Look towards the flag.
  • If you are injured, you must contact our doctor as soon as possible. This also applies to injuries that occur in the club team.
  • Inform the doctor if you are taking food supplements or medicine.
  • Always have shoes, toiletries and underwear in hand luggage when travelling.
  • Participate in joint stretching after training and matches.
  • Everyone goes sightseeing.
  • We have our mobile phones switched off during meals, training and gatherings.
  • Everyone is responsible for their own physical training.
  • All details regarding offensive and defensive play must be passed down from the older guys to the younger guys.
  • The older and established players are obliged to make sure that the younger ones feel welcome in the team.
  • Talk about pure poetry!
