The Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic, number 21 in the WTA, was proclaimed this Sunday champion of the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston by defeating the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, tenth in the world ranking, in the final.
Bencic, who had beaten the Spanish Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals, beat Jabeur 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 on clay in Charleston in two hours and 35 minutes.
This is the sixth title for Bencic throughout his career -including Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020- and Charleston marks his first victory on clay.
The Swiss started the match firmly. She broke serve in the second turn serving her rival and put the direct to write down the first set on the fast track against a very uncomfortable Jabeur on the track and who was weighed down by her mistakes.
Jabeur improved notably in the second set, which ended up scoring after a set in which the two tennis players exchanged service breaks.
Bencic did not feel the blow, who in the final set was much more solid than Jabeur. bencicwho had already beaten Jabeur in the only precedent between them to date (Madrid 2021), will climb to thirteenth place in the WTA ranking with her victory in Charleston.
