Ben Affleck is suddenly the new main Batman again

Two years ago, DC landed a phenomenal casting coup: Michael Keaton, one of the most popular Batman actors, was to play the role of the Dark Knight after three decades re-record in the highly anticipated multiverse adventure The Flash. As if that wasn’t enough, he was also set to appear in HBO Max’s planned Batgirl, not to mention a cameo in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Three DC appearances in a very short space of time: Despite notable competition from Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson, who also roamed the streets of Gotham as Batman, Keaton’s version was unceremoniously named the main Batman. Now, however, the DC Universe stands once again before the collapse and the long-planned return threatens to lose all meaning.

Michael Keaton’s Batman comeback has been a tale of failure so far

In theory, The Flash is the DC equivalent of Spider-Man: No Way Home from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The multiverse is bringing back actors and characters from which we were have long since said goodbye. The nostalgia bonus makes fans happy and ensures crossover events that seemed impossible for a long time, thus attracting even more viewers to the cinemas out of curiosity.

The reintroduction of Keaton’s Batman turns out to be more difficult than expected. Of the three Keaton appearances, only one is now certain. And even with that one, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the corresponding film.

  • Batgirl: As we’ve known for a few days, Warner completely scrapped the DC movie even though it was already wrapped. We will never see this appearance of Keaton’s Batman based on the current status.
  • Aquaman 2: According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Keaton’s Batman performance was cut from the DC sequel because it confused test audiences. Aquaman 2 was originally supposed to start after The Flash.
  • Flash: The DC blockbuster made negative headlines due to Ezra Miller and was delayed several times. Now The Flash is due out in June 2023, but it’s unclear in what version.
  • Keaton’s comeback has gone from sensational to one history of failure transformed. This is mainly due to the DC restructuring resulting from the reorganized executive floor at Warner Bros. Discovery. Still, the story has an unexpected winner: Ben Affleck.

DC failed Ben Affleck’s Batman, but Ben Affleck’s Batman never failed DC

The Batman actor was secretly written off years ago and should finally be said goodbye in The Flash. Not least his own solo film never came about. But now he reveals himself as a franchise joker. Where Keaton’s Batman no longer fits into Aquaman 2, he can spontaneously fill the gap.

    Ben Affleck as Batman

Keaton’s Batman is a magic trick that DC must first show us in order to organically incorporate and benefit from Keaton in the universe. Just like Marvel did with the multiverse opening in No Way Home. Affleck’s supposedly failed Batman, on the other hand, is a stable foundation. Even fans who don’t follow DC closely still know him. It is a natural part of the universe

There are few developments in contemporary blockbuster cinema that can match Affleck’s DC career. As annoying as the chaos in the Marvel competitor is: That Affleck’s Batman is still without a dogged effort from the actor always finds its way back somehow

    – be it in Zack Snyder’s Justice League or Aquaman 2 – is as intriguing as it is admirable.
