Beloved athletics icon has tragically passed away – aged just 50

The sports world is in great sadness after the terrible announcement.
The pole vaulting icon Tim Lobinger has passed away, he was only 50 years old.
“He did not lose the fight, but won it in his own way,” writes the closest family in an open letter.

For ten years the pole vault star belonged Tim Lobinger the absolute world top in pole vaulting. He became the first German ever to clear the dream limit of six meters and won WC gold indoors and took three more EC medals indoors.

Legends dead

In 2006, Lobinger ended his athletics career and in 2017, life took a completely new turn for the legend when he was diagnosed with the cancer variant leukemia. He managed to win the battle against cancer once and was declared healthy, but last year the cancer returned again.

And this time it was incurable.
– I am no longer getting better. The cancer is too aggressive. The conversations with the children are tough and they know how bad I am there, Lobinger told the German newspaper Bild last year.

Holm’s grief

Tim Lobinger managed to turn 50 but has now died of complications from cancer.
“Tim Lobinger passed away on February 16 in Munich at the age of 50 after a serious illness. The former pole vaulting legend fell asleep peacefully in a small circle. He did not lose the fight, but won it in his own way,” writes the closest family in an open letter via the German newspaper.
“We ask that you refrain from further media requests out of respect for the family.”

The sports world is now in mourning for having lost yet another profile far too soon. On social media, tributes and condolences are pouring in for the popular German.
“Rest in peace, Tim,” writes the Swedish high jump icon Stefan Holm on Twitter.

Also the football club RB Leipzig, with Swedish Emil Forsberg in the team, expressing his grief publicly. Lobinger was a physical trainer within the club during the years 2012-16.
“We mourn Tim Lobinger. Tim was a coach at the club from 2012 to 2016 and has been part of the RBL family ever since. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends,” the Bundesliga club wrote on Twitter.
