For years, the US League of Legends teams have been seen as laughing stock when it comes to the World Championship. That changed on Thursday, October 10th. The US champion FlyQuest competed against the South Korean champion Hanhwa Life and achieved a respectable success at the LoL Worlds 2024. Key players were the Belgian Bwipo and the Pole Inspired.
This was the sad picture of the USA in LoL in recent years: The US teams have been embarrassing themselves bitterly at the Worlds for years:
In their own league, LEC, players like Bjergsen and Doublelift were big stars and trash talk master Doublelift in particular behaved like that, but year after year their top teams like TSM were eliminated from the Worlds with no chance. In 2020, Bjergsen and Doublelift suffered an 0-6 exit from Worlds.
While Europe had at least one exceptional team in G2 that could keep up with the teams from Asia in terms of points, that was not the case in the USA.
The morale of the US fans was actually broken and the expectations for the Worlds 2024 were low, especially since the best team in the USA, TeamSoloMid, has now withdrawn from LoL – even for the other top team in the Cloud9 region, things were going well in 2024 not good.
Combo of Olaf and Nunu surprises South Koreans
Now that was the respectable success: The US champion FlyQuest succeeded on October 10th. actually, surprising the South Korean champions Hanwha Life with a crazy draft and an aggressive, chaotic style of play. FlyQuest lost Match 1 narrowly and Match 3 clearly. But Match 2 was the hour of a crazy combination:
Olaf and Nunu are both champions in LoL who allow and reward wild, almost reckless play. South Koreans are known for playing as methodically and controlled as possible and for wearing down and slowly suffocating the opponent by denying the opponent all opportunities to take objective on the map.
The outsiders FlyQuest surprisingly won Match 2 against absolute world-class players like Peanut, Zeka and Viper.
Perhaps the most exciting scene shows you how Bwipo goes into a berserker frenzy with Olaf and then seems to wake up from it himself. Caedrel comments:
This is how it is discussed: Match 2 and FlyQuest’s performance are commented on on reddit with respect and amusement.
Inspired’s “Nunu” pick in particular surprised the South Koreans in the eyes of fans. The elite top planner Doran certainly hasn’t seen a nunu in the last 5 years, it says.
Overall, the fans are happy to see a team from North America make an unusual pick and surprise the South Koreans, who play so methodically. In recent years, US teams with conservative team compositions have tried to beat the best players in the world at their own game. That is completely hopeless. Things were different in 2024, praise fans.
What’s next? Hanwha Life is safely in the quarterfinals. Despite the respectable success, FlyQuest lost the series and will play on Sunday to either fly home or advance to the quarterfinals.
A team from South Korea is once again unlucky: Showmaker and DK Plus will also try to make it to the quarter-finals on Sunday. Today on Friday, October 11th, an absolute highlight awaits Worlds fans with G2 against T1: The decisive phase of the LoL World Championship starts in Berlin, European teams draw tough draws
